EXPERIENCES
This is the bench's current state. The dome will not remain on the pedestal but instead will be part of a mock wall or a square hanging block. |
This is the dome with a back projection. |
An overview shot of the bench before the canvas was painted gray. |

Initially practice projection with photoshop of white wall. |
The switch of the video projection is handled by a program called Max MSP/Jitter |
Sensors are read into a chip that is connected to a computer running the Max program. This allows the sculpture to utilize the computer. |
Back to Contact- I am currently working on an interactive bench piece. In reality it is a series of chairs with a high canvas back. On the other side of the high back is another series of chairs. If you were to sit down at one of these chairs you would see a projection of yourself on a head sized dome approximately 5 feet in front of you. The video of yourself on the 12" dome is projected from behind the dome (so you are neither disturbed nor distracted by a beam of light). If a person sat down behind you your backs would make contact because the back of this piece is made of canvas wrapped around a metal frame. Once contact is made the video projection you had been watching would change. You would now be watching a video (on a dome) of the face of the person behind you. The person behind you watches a similar projection, only it's of you. While you might begin to be curious about the person whose back you can feel, you can't easily look at each other over the back of the bench due to the height of the bench's back (6'). This piece sculpts your contact and interaction.
